Material Selection Simplified

As a leader in magnetic shielding, Ad-Vance Magnetics helps make material decisions easy.

Why material selection matters

The effectiveness of a magnetic shield depends heavily on choosing the right material for your application.

At Ad-Vance Magnetics, we help customers evaluate:

  • Magnetic field strength
  • Operating temperature
  • Shield geometry
  • Performance requirements

By assessing these factors early in the design process, we help customers choose the right shielding material for their specific application, optimizing performance while preventing costly redesigns and delays.

Understanding Shielding Material Performance

Optimal material choices depend on the strength of the magnetic field and the operating environment. Selecting the correct material helps ensure the magnetic field remains effective under real-world operating conditions.

A material’s permeability is its ability to attract and redirect magnetic interference away from sensitive components.

Materials with higher permeability are generally more effective at shielding weak magnetic fields.

When the magnetic field is too intense for the material’s thickness or type, the alloy becomes saturated, and shielding effectiveness decreases.

Selecting the correct material helps ensure the magnetic field remains effective under real-world operating conditions.

How to Choose the Correct Alloy

Shielding materials vary in permeability, meaning they perform differently under different field strengths and operating environments.

Cryogenic Magnetic Shielding

Many magnetic shielding materials lose effectiveness at extremely low temperatures.

For systems operating in liquid helium (4.2K) or liquid nitrogen (77K) environments, Ad-Vance offers Cryoperm 10, a specialized magnetic shielding material designed to maintain performance in low temperatures after proper annealing.

Cryogenic materials are commonly used in:

  • Quantum computing systems
  • Cryogenic research equipment
  • Advanced scientific instrumentation

When Once Shielding Layer Isn’t Enough:
Ad-Vance’s Multi-Layer Magnetic Shield Solutions

In some cases, shielding performance cannot be achieved with a single material layer. When this is the case, Ad-Vance combines material science and precision fabrication to produce nested, multi-layer shielding systems. We combine high-saturation and high-permeability materials to maximize shielding performance.

Outer layer of shielding

The outer layer is fabricated from high-saturation Ad-Mu alloys, such as Ad-Mu-48. Designed to handle stronger external fields, this layer absorbs and redirects a significant portion of magnetic noise, preventing saturation of the inner shielding layers.

Inner layers of shielding

Inner layers are fabricated using high-permeability materials, such as Ad-Mu-80. These layers are designed to pull remaining magnetic field lines into the material and away from the protected quantum computing environment, ensuring function is not compromised.

Heat treating magnetic shields

To achieve optimal performance, magnetic shielding components undergo hydrogen annealing. This controlled heat treatment process restores and optimizes magnetic permeability, ensuring shielding materials perform as intended.

Ad-Mu Magnetic Shielding Foil Material

Ad-Mu is Ad-Vance’s proprietary line of magnetic shielding materials.

For an efficient, economical choice, we offer high and low-permeability magnetic shielding foils. These flexible materials eliminate the cost of designing and manufacturing prefabricated magnetic shields while simplifying installation in hard-to-access locations.
